The National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA) is a Public Research Organization of the State Secretariat of Research of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Its unique mandate entails a dual responsibility. As coordinator of the national network of agri food research centres is responsible for the harmonization, resource allocation, monitoring and evaluation of scientific and technical research activities under the Deputy Directorate General of Prospective and Program Coordination and as an agrifood research institution, is responsible for the execution of its own research and technology projects (including technology transfer) under the Deputy Directorate General of Research and Technology.
In the Area of International Scientific Relationships INIA has the following competences:
- Represent the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness at international research organizations in the area of agricultural and food research
- Stimulate international cooperation with the Autonomous Regions
- Establish agreements with public and private organizations for the execution of research projects and other scientific activities
- Foster and promote coordination and cooperation in EU programmes and other international programmes in agricultural and food research and technology.
INIA carries out R&D activities in the agri food sector through its Deputy Directorate General for Research and Technology at different specialized centres and departments. The main objective of the Department of Plant Protection is the study of the enemies of crop plants, especially investigating the integrated control of pests, diseases and weeds in the context of sustainable agriculture, according to current legislation, with special attention to the environment and biodiversity, as well as optimizing resources.
