The Forest Research Institute carries out scientific and developmental studies in forestry sciences. The main research directions are:

  • Impact of industrial emissions and other man-caused factors on forests, and restitution of withdrawing stands

  • Economic conditions of forestry development with reference to other sectors of national economy
  • Improvement of technological processes in forest management
  • Ergonomics, safety and labour protection in forestry

The research team involved in BIOCOMES works in the Department of Forest Protection, which activity  focuses on  research and advisory work:


  • Biology, ecology and economic importance of insects
  • Methods of forecasting appearance of pest insects and controlling their population
  • Use of chemical and biological insecticides in forest protection and their impact on the forest environment
  • Improvement of the resistance of forest ecosystems to pests

Advisory work:

  • Identification of forest tree diseases and harmful insects
  • Application of pheromones and insecticides in forest protection
  • An annual assessment of the occurrence of major forest pest insects and a forecast of their occurrence in the next year.
